Applying the Magic of Mantra to Your Life

mala beads

Sanskrit mantras take us into deeper states of awareness. These instruments of conscious intention activate the body’s energy centers and bring about changes in our inner and outer worlds. This is the perfect time to join with others in a supportive, intentional mantra practice community.

Each day begins with a powerful, guided, cleansing pranayama. After that, we speak, sing, chant, and dance our mantras, do yoga flow with mantra, and sit in silent mantra repetition.

Taking Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya as our primary mantra, we also practice

  • The Gayatri mantra, said to be the most supreme and potent of all mantras
  • Mantras to Ganesha to clear away obstacles
  • Mantras to Lakshmi to attract abundance in every area of life
  • The ancient mantra for transformation, Om Namah Shivaya.

Experience what having a mantra practice feels like as you create a personal ”family” of mantras to continue practicing at home.

Note Bring a journal, mala beads (if you have them), and small pictures of loved ones.

57 Interlaken
Stockbridge, MA 01263
1-800-741-7353
Price: $200.00 plus room and board

Presenters: Sara Meeks and Bhavani Lorraine Nelson

For all levels; no prior yoga experience needed.

We are, in essence, harmonic beings, vibrating crystals that respond to the forces of the universe. This unique new workshop with two longtime Kripalu teachers demonstrates how movement from the inside out enables us to free our voices from the ground up. Sara Meeks and Bhavani Lorraine Nelson combine muscle contraction, spinal compression, tension, torsion, and the effect of gravity with breath, sound, music, and movement. This unique combination creates a profound consciousness of the body.

This weekend includes

  • Principles of S. A. F. E. Yoga (Skeletally Appropriate For Everyone) alignment in seated, standing, supine, and prone positions
  • The freedom of “toning” as Bhavani invites us into a magical wash of sound alive with the intention of healing ourselves and the universe
  • The Spinal Rock, a Meeks Method original, designed to relax and heal the structures of the spine through rhythmic movement accompanied by music.

Take home practical suggestions for your yoga practice and your life from a program that leaves your body, mind, and spirit humming, your bones resonating, and your feet dancing to the rhythm of your own harmonic being.

Recommended reading Sara Meeks, Walk Tall! 2nd edition (Triad).

Speech Contest at Hancock Shaker Village, April 14TMI logo on white
Toastmasters Contestants to Present Tall Tales and International Speeches

I will be joining contestants from four area Toastmasters public speaking clubs to compete in a speech contest on Saturday, April 14, at Hancock Shaker Village in Hancock, MA. The two-hour event begins at 10:15 a.m., with doors opening at 10 a.m.

The public is invited to attend and see how Toastmasters helps people with little speaking experience learn how to “take center stage” to present a speech with courage and confidence. Audience members should arrive on time, as attendees will not be allowed to enter while a speech is in progress.

The Tall Tales contest challenges the speaker’s ability to, in three to five minutes, deliver a story that comically tests the listener’s credulity. A classic example of this quintessentially American art form is the story of Paul Bunyan, who is bigger than big and stronger than strong. Contestants giving an International Speech speak for five to seven minutes on any topic, often choosing subjects that are inspiring or motivational.

Admission to the contest is free. Those planning to stay afterwards to visit Hancock Shaker Village and its baby farm animals pay an admission fee. Lunch is available in the on-site café. Hancock Shaker Village is located at 1843 West Housatonic St., Pittsfield, MA  01201. For directions and admissions information, visit www.hancockshakervillage.org.

The local public speaking clubs participating in the contest are part of Toastmasters International, a nonprofit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs. Learn more at www.toastmasters.org.

My workshop is entitled, "A Simple "How-To" and "Who's Who" Introduction to Sanskrit Mantra" - Please read on for a class description...

WORKSHOP INFO

ask GaneshaSo you’ve discovered chanting and are enjoying it. Perhaps you’ve even practiced a mantra or two. But do you really know whom you’re chanting to? Do you know your Gayatri from your Ganesha, or do Krishna and Vishnu still sound like Greek to you? If you’ve ever wondered what energies are invoked with mantra repetition or if you’re the least bit unsure about the proper way to do mantra practice, this workshop is for you!

In this workshop we will unravel the mystery of Sanskrit mantra. You’ll learn some of the benefits of the simple, ancient practice of chanting to the divine, you’ll get clear on various methods of practicing these mystical phrases, and you’ll explore the archetypal energies represented by some of the major Hindu deities.

First we’ll take a look at the “Hindu Who’s Who” of Sanskrit mantra and see how the Hindu trinity relates to the Christian trinity. Then we’ll expand our view to take in a few of the most important members of the pantheon. You might say that we’ll be meeting the Hindu “Divine royal family.”

Each family member possesses specific traits or characteristics. Deepak Chopra calls them archetypes. Thomas Ashley-Farrand (Namadeva Archarya) talks about the deities as anthropomorphized qualities that we can incorporate into ourselves through mantra chanting. As you become familiar with the major players in the Hindu tradition, you can customize your practice by choosing specific mantras that will invoke the qualities possessed by these individual deities.

We’ll explore more closely three major players that can be very helpful to us in our daily lives. The first is Ganesha, the powerful warrior son of Shiva, whom we’ll ask to clear away all the obstacles for us for 2012. After that we’ll invoke Lakshmi to bestow prosperity upon us in every area of our lives. Finally we’ll address Krishna, practicing one of his most powerful mantras, Om namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya. This particular mantra brings abundance just as Lakshmi does, but it is primarily about gaining an experience of the Divine being you are.

Through the repetition of each of these three mantras, you’ll have an opportunity to taste what the different archetypes or energies feel like in your body. By the end of the session you’ll know how to practice mantra and you’ll have a clearer idea about how to choose a mantra that can enhance your life by bringing in specific qualities you desire.

CONFERENCE INFO

YHC2012 3free

The Virtual World Yoga and Meditation Conference is a virtual or online event where you get access to approximately 10 speakers each day from Tuesday, February 7th to Saturday, February 11th – all from the convenience of your home. All you need is a phone or web access to participate and your computer to download your handouts. It’s that simple.

You get complete access to all the live calls, the ability to interact with other participants and teachers in our online forum, “follow-along” handouts and action steps for each session, plus full recorded replays that will be available following the conference.

Which means you can take the conference workshops at your own pace—no need to choose one over the other, or lament the fact that you can’t “do them all”. Because each session is recorded, you have up to two weeks after the live conference has ended to listen to the speaker, and to ask questions on the forum.

For more info on the conference, please go to: http://www.yogahub.com/ref/Bhavani/6ed5e0c6.html
PS - If you'd like to take a sneak peek of what the conference is like, feel free to visit www.bit.ly/w7ok8 for access to 3 free sessions from last year's conference.

Applying the Magic of Mantra (Dec 26-30) - 7:30 p.m. Friday Night Start
57 Interlaken
Stockbridge, MA 01263
1-800-741-7353
Price: $275.00 plus room and board

For all levels.

Sanskrit mantras take us beyond our everyday mind and into deeper states of awareness. These instruments of conscious intention activate the body’s energy centers and bring about changes in our inner and outer worlds. This sacred season, as we collectively transition into the year 2012, is the perfect opportunity to unite in the supportive and generating power of a mantra practice community.

Each day begins with a powerful, guided, cleansing pranayama. After that, our practice takes many forms as we speak, sing, chant, and dance our mantras, do yoga flow with mantra, and sit in silent mantra repetition.

Taking Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya as our primary mantra, we also practice

  • The Gayatri mantra, said to be the most supreme and potent of all mantras
  • Mantras to Ganesha to clear away obstacles for ourselves and our planet
  • Mantras to Lakshmi to attract abundance in every area of life
  • The ancient mantra for transformation, Om Namah Shivaya.

Create for yourself a personal “family” of mantras to use as you continue practicing at home.

Note Bring a journal, mala beads, and small pictures of loved ones.

A Morning of Yoga and Chanting with Bhavani - 9:00 am - 11:30 am
450 Albany Shaker Road
Loudonville (Albany), New York
Price: $10.00

Whether you are already an experienced yogi and a lover of Kirtan or are new to Asana and Sanskrit chanting and wondering what it's all about, this workshop is for you. We'll begin with a gentle asana practice to ease the body into an awakened, energized state. Then we'll immerse ourselves in devotional yoga, invoking various of the divine energies with our chanting. We'll also explore the background and benefits of Kirtan and the qualities that we're invoking.

Since the beginning of time, chanting has been a part of all spiritual traditions. In the Yogic tradition, Sanskrit chanting is part of the branch of yoga called the yoga of devotion (Bhakti yoga), and many find that chanting does evoke that yearning of the heart to experience more fully the mystery that is life. It can also elicit a deep, meditative state and a clearing of the body, mind, and spirit. The benefits of chanting are magnified when it’s practiced in a group, so bring all your friends and discover what the practice does for you.

Bhavani Lorraine Nelson is a professional level Kripalu Yoga Teacher and has taught at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health since 1988. She first encountered Sanskrit chanting with Ram Das in 1971 and has been leading kirtan at Kripalu and other venues for 23 years.

Cost of the event is $10.00

I am participating in the 2nd Annual Virtual World Yoga Conference
Lovingkindness - A Meditation For Our Times with Bhavani Lorraine Nelson - 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
Virtual World Yoga Conference

888.YOGA.HUB
Price: Click link below for more detail

I'm participating again in this year's 2nd Annual Virtual World Yoga and Meditation Conference. The session I'm doing this year is "Lovingkindness -- A Meditation For Our Times".

Lovingkindness Meditation is the practice of giving blessings — to one’s self, others, and all beings. It is a practice found in many spiritual traditions, and is an “anywhere, anytime” technique that is perfect for our chaotic times. One of the most soothing of the concentration practices, it is ideal for anyone who is stressed out or dealing with some sort of crisis. I recommend it to caregivers to do for those they care for and to teachers to do for their students, but it is really for everyone. In fact, the world would be a better place if more of us practiced Lovingkindness Meditation.

The workshop begins with a brief discussion of meditation and why this particular concentration practice is so beneficial. Next we look at the basic phrases used in the meditation, noting how they have changed over the years from the original translation of the Buddha’s Pali language, and at the various methods of giving the blessings. Participants will then be guided through an experience of the classical order of offering the blessings. Following the experience, there will be a question/answer and sharing time to make sure everyone feels comfortable continuing the practice on their own.

The narrow bridge between the old year and the new offers a profound opportunity for quiet contemplation. It’s a time to honor everything you have accomplished in the past year and bring yourself powerfully present to support the year to come. Whether you are totally new to meditation, would like to learn different techniques, or already have a practice you love, this is a great time to join together with others who share a common purpose.

During the weekend, you will experience several major meditation techniques from the yogic and Buddhist traditions, including

  • Meditation on the breath
  • Metta (loving-kindness) meditation
  • Walking meditation
  • Pranayama (breathing exercises) as meditation
  • Sanskrit mantra meditation and chanting.

Bhavani Lorraine Nelson is known for her clear instruction and user-friendly approach. You will leave with a meditation practice that brings greater peace, equanimity, and contentment to your life, along with the inspiration and guidance you need to continue meditating at home.

Note After the opening program session, you will be free to celebrate the New Year however you like. You can join the New Year’s Eve event in the Main Hall, continue meditating in Kripalu’s meditation room, or go to bed early and begin the New Year fully rested.
